About Lotanne Ethan Okoye

My name is Lotanna Okoye, and I am a senior at Cardinal Newman School in Columbia, S.C. Growing up as the son of an Army veteran, I have always admired the sacrifices made by those who serve our country. My father dedicated over 20 years to the Army, shaping my understanding of service, commitment, and resilience.

I have volunteered more than 590 hours at the Columbia VA Medical Center, where I’ve connected with many veterans. Listening to their stories have deepened my appreciation for their sacrifices and the challenges they face, including medical, mental health and social issues.

These experiences motivate me to advocate for better support systems for our veterans and raise awareness about their struggles. At Cardinal Newman, I am actively involved in a variety of clubs. As a member of the Beta Club, I uphold the values of service, leadership, and academic excellence, participating in projects that give back to the community. As a member of the Black Student Union, I help

facilitate discussions on diversity and cultural awareness, fostering a sense of community among students and promoting inclusivity. In Spanish Club and French Club, I not only improve my language skills but also explore the rich cultures associated with each language. These clubs enhance my appreciation for diversity and help me connect with classmates from different backgrounds.

As part of the Kairos/Retreat Team, I assist in planning and leading retreats that strengthen the spiritual connection among my peers. This role has allowed me to grow as a leader and support my classmates in their personal journeys.

Through my volunteer work and school activities, I am committed to making a positive impact in my community. I believe in honoring the sacrifices of our veterans by providing support to those who have given so much for our freedom.
